Groupmuse is now in its 8th year — nearly a decade. It’s enough time that the young artists in our community have truly grown with Groupmuse. Some, in fact, started as conservatory students playing raucous house-party ‘muses till the wee hours and have gone on to win international prizes and play the major concert halls of the world. And the artist that’s had perhaps the most stratospheric ascent is composer/conductor/pianist Matt Aucoin.

The summer before its beginning, when Groupmuse was a glint in founder Sam Bodkin’s eye, he met Matt Aucoin at the Boston Symphony Orchestra's Tanglewood. Both were just out of college and ready to make a splash. They chatted excitedly about the future of classical music and its proliferating possibilities. The intervening years have been good to us — this past January alone, Groupmuse organized 72 concerts in New York City and 200 nationally. As for Maestro Aucoin... well, he’s conducted the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, has been commissioned to write an opera by the Metropolitan Opera, and is currently the LA Opera’s first Artist-in-Residence. Oh, also, he’s a MacArthur Genius. So yeah. He’s got it going on.

So we’re honored and humbled to throw a Massivemuse for the sake of an Aucoin World Premiere: a piece for solo cello called From a Desert, commissioned by cellist Nico Olarte-Hayes with support from a Leonore Annenberg Arts Fellowship. A MacArthur Fellow writing a brand new piece to take its maiden voyage with a Groupmuse crowd is a feather we’ll wear in our hats for a while.

The performer will be Nico Olarte-Hayes himself. He will pair Aucoin’s work with a solo cello suite by J.S. Bach, and he'll close out the night with some cello duos, together with another great cellist — Eric Jacobsen, whom Brooklyn-based 'musers might also know as conductor of The Knights, the GRAMMY-nominated orchestral collective.

Tickets are $20, and it’s at the beautiful Cary Hall in Hudson Yards' DiMenna Center. It's BYOB and bring your own blanket, yoga mat, floor cushion — whatever your pleasure — because we’re gonna get cozy on the floor, Groupmuse style. Chairs will be available for those that need them.

See you there!

What's the music?
