 Come join us for a evening of music for cello and piano by Beethoven\, Sch
 umann\, Rachmaninoff\, Chopin\, and more.  The balance between the two ins
 truments shifts over the course of the program – from the explosive ener
 gy and rapid-fire piano writing of the young Beethoven\, to the lyrical ce
 llo melodies and virtuoso writing of the Spanish Gaspar Cassado.\n\nOne he
 ars other elements of the music shift as well\, from the off-beat\, jagged
  rhythms in Robert Schumann to the lush blankets of harmonies in Sergei Ra
 chmaninoff.\n\nScarfe and Akert will bring the audience into this balancin
 g act\, narrating the program with a behind-the-scenes presentation. They 
 will explore the history of the composers\, the context of their music\, a
 nd specific examples that offer a kind of listening guide. Find out which 
 passages are Charly's favorites\, what the duo argued about in rehearsals\
 , and why Ian calls Schumann's music “way out there.”\n\nThe Scarfe-Ak
 ert Duo have performed together since 2007\, and have a long history of co
 ncerts across the United States\, Canada\, and Europe.  \n\nWe live on Bay
  Street\, just across from Fort Mason and a stone’s throw from Fisherman
 ’s Wharf. We're close to everything in downtown SF and many restaurants 
 on Chestnut\, Steiner and Union streets. It's relatively easy to get here 
 by bus\, and parking is easier than in many SF neighborhoods. We hope this
  will be a low-key event for a wide range of ages and interests. We'll ser
 ve (mostly white) wine\, beer and snacks (usually some cheese\, nachos\, e
 tc.) - but feel free to bring the beverage you most enjoy (e.g. red wine i
 f you prefer that over white) and any snacks you'd like to share.  There w
 ill be both chairs and floor seating.
