Gripping battles, long voyages, extreme weather, espionage, the incredible natural wonders of the Galápagos Islands... and chamber music parties???
Way back in 2003, a movie was made from Patrick O'Brien's beautifully-written, historically meticulous series of novels about British Navy Captain Jack Aubrey (violinist) and his dear friend, then ship's surgeon, Doctor Stephen Maturin (cellist). The spectacle of them sawing away together in the cabin of a graceful ship under sail, whether in joyful companionship or commiseration, made the film a total hit with our own violinist. The little Boccherini piece that Jack strums in the film to beckon Stephen to his cello found its way into our own life on tough days, an invitation to togetherness and musical healing.
Let us welcome you, too, for a respite from hardship, anxiety, the loneliness of command (or prolonged pandemic quarantine), or whatever else may be weighing you down.
What's the music?
Corelli: Violin Sonata No. 7 (9.5min)
Haydn: Duet in D for Violin & Cello (9.5min)
Locatelli: Violin Sonata No. 3 (9.5)
Boccherini: La Musica Notturna Delle Strade di Madrid (9.5min)
