Nikolai Medtner was deemed the greatest composer of his lifetime by his friend and colleague Sergei Rachmaninoff, yet his music is still seldom performed compared to Rachmaninoff's music. I have prepared a program that will hopefully spark your interest with two dense works (two single-movement sonatas) alongside some smaller pieces titled "skazki", or tales.

My hopes for this program are that you develop an interest in Medtner's music (who wrote music that always included the piano!) whose music I feel deeply about. His extensive catalogue of music is an entire universe worth exploring. There is an incredible amount of originality and freshness I believe you will find in this music, so I hope you can join me!

What's the music?

Nikolai Medtner - Sonata in A minor, Op. 30, "During the War 1914–17"

Sergei Rachmaninoff - Prelude in E Major, Op. 32, No. 3
Nikolai Medtner - Skazka in A Major, Op. 51, No. 3

Nikolai Medtner - Sonata in F minor, Op. 53, No. 2 , "Minacciosa"

Nikolai Medtner - Skazka in E minor, Op. 14, No. 2, "March of the Paladin"
Nikolai Medtner - Skazka in G Major, Op. 51, No. 6
