This past year I wrote an EP titled Darkness is a Myth. Because of corona, I wasn't able to play these pieces publicly post-release. So now is a better time than ever to do so! You'll hear tracks from this EP, a short film titled 2:19 am, and a work about radical self-love.
Darkness is a Myth, vibrant and versatile performer-composer Clifton Joseph Guidry III’s first self-released EP explores the human-like qualities of the bassoon’s voice through a range of extended techniques including multiphonics, vocalizations as well as thoughtful additions of field recordings and electronics through experimental yet beautifully lyrical storytelling. This album is a representation of how Clifton sees the world on a spectrum of dark and light. This is an album that crosses that spectrum of darkness and lightness and borders between cinematic film score, free jazz and ultimately the listener’s own internal monologue in discussing radical self-love and radical self-care. The recording features Clifton Joseph Guidry III as both composer and performer. All works heard here were composed in 2020: these are their premiere recordings.
This Planetarymuse is presented by Groupmuse Foundation’s Planetary Music Movement. This bridge-building endeavor guides Groupmuse to overcome the historical Eurocentrism within the classical music tradition, by celebrating historical and contemporary musical traditions of the planet, particularly and imminently through the inclusion and celebration of works by artists of African descent.
