DESCRIPTION:Hosted by \nMusicians: \n\nOur friends at **The Boston Philharm
onic** welcome our Groupmuse community members back for an incredible even
ing of programming\, this time featuring **Schubert**'s *Symphony No. 8* a
nd **Mahler**'s *Das Lied von der Erde*!\n\nWe have a limited number of ti
ckets tiered usually at $60 a pop available for our community members for
**only $20** (and $15 for Supermusers). This incredible deal includes an o
ptional pre-concert lecture about the program given by Boston Phil's own l
egendary conductor\, **Benjamin Zander** at 6:45pm before the concert begi
ns.\n\nMore about the program\, direct from the Boston Philharmonic websit
e: \n\nSchubert’s “Unfinished” Symphony is among Mr. Zander’s very
favorite works\, but\, surprisingly\, he and the orchestra haven’t perf
ormed it since 2008. No one knows why Schubert failed to finish this symp
honic torso of almost heavenly beauty (he lived for six more years after w
riting it)\, although speculation has been as endless as it is fruitless.
Whatever the reason\, there is no doubt that it has deservedly become one
of the most beloved works in the classical canon\, and\, after the Beetho
ven Fifth\, the one that everybody recognizes.\n\nDas Lied von der Erde (T
he Song of the Earth)\, Mahler's supreme creation for voice and orchestra
and one of his most beloved works\, is a setting of six Chinese poems in G
erman translation that reflect preoccupations that Mahler held throughout
his life: the transitory nature of earthly things\, the intoxication of lo
ve\, the horrifying irony with which death mocks all human endeavor\, and
the ultimate need for everyone to surrender his attachments to this world
and accept what is to come. Neither Mahler nor anyone else ever composed m
usic of more poignant beauty than the "Abschied" The soloists are among th
e world’s most celebrated performers of this work: mezzo-soprano Dame Sa
rah Connolly\, described by The Times of London as\, "...[she] sang straig
ht from the heart. I won’t forget her final Der Abschied: that cool flut
e and menacing double bass\, then a voice of rich\, lunar beauty lighting
up this long farewell\;” and tenor Stefan Vinke\, who Bachtrack describe
d as\, "I don’t think there’s another tenor in the world who can hit t
he levels Vinke does and make it sound so casual."\n\n[More information ab
out the program can be found on The Boston Philharmonic's website.](https:
 //www.bostonphil.org/concerts/2022-2023/bpo4-schubert-mahler)\n\n*Children
over the age of 5 are welcomed.*\n\n*Groupmuse ticket buyers are instruct
ed to pick up their tickets at the VIP/Group table in the Symphony Hall lo
bby near the box office. Groups wishing to sit together are instructed to
