DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Ania M.\nMusicians: Mark Deutsch\n\nLast weekend I ha
d the pleasure to hearing Mark accompanying a Butoh performance on the Baz
antar. Butoh is a Japanese art theater and Bazantar is a sound healing st
ring instrument that Mark invented. It has a transcendental soundscape th
at opens the mind and heals the body.\n\nPlease join me at this special pe
rformance that serendipitously came together for the month of November. J
ust in time for the election and Thanksgiving season to get us into a zen
state of mind.\n\nAs always\, this will be a potluck\, so bring a dish or
an appetite.\n\nAbout the musician:\nI have been a professional musician s
ince the age of twelve. I have a background in non-linear mathematics\, sa
cred systems\, and cosmology. I am a classically trained contrabassist and
sitarist. As a performer\, I have extensive experience in orchestral and
world music ensembles\, jazz/blues combos\, and solo sitar recitals. I inv
ented a new acoustic instrument\, the Bazantar. It was awarded a patent in
1999. Since inventing the Bazantar\, my main focus has been on developing
the performance techniques (pedagogy) for this instrument\, composing\, r
ecording\, teaching\, doing workshops\, and lecturing on sound and music
’s effects on physiology and consciousness. My latest solo album is The
Picasso Tunings\, a four-hour tone poem of unaccompanied Bazantar music\,
and my most recent film work as a featured musician is Apple TV’s Prehis
toric Planet with David Attenborough\, Nocturnes\, a 2024 Sundance Documen
tary Film Festival award winner\, and Water For Life\, a film about indige
nous water rights.\nMusic\nI am an expert improviser\, a Jazz musician who
grew up playing the entire canon of American popular music in my family's
combo. I am also a classically trained sitarist and orchestra contrabassi
 st. What I do has a vast pan-cultural vibe\, meditative\, Avante Garde\, t
raditional\, and spiritual with elements of many cultures: European\, Indi
 an\, Persian\, African\, Chinese\, American\, Japanese\, and so on. I am c
onsidered an expert on different cultures' tuning systems and the underlyi
ng mathematics that makes them distinct. People typically experience what
I do as a soloist as healing though sometimes\, depending on the situation
\, exorcistic. I am flexible and have performed in a multitude of differen
t environments. My main music instructors were Henry Loew and Carolyn Whit
e of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra\, and Ustad Imrat Khan\, the world
-renowned Surbahar Maestro. Everything I perform is an original compositio
 n.
