DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Daisy S.\nMusicians: Luis Eduardo Bellorín\, Chris W
hitley\, Kumiko Sakamoto\, and Bridget Pasker\n\nYou will not forget this
evening of epic music in a large and beautiful community space in San Fran
 cisco.\n\nSome stories:\n.........\n#1\nIt's 1946. Dmitriy Shostakovich h
as just had his Symphony no. 9 censured by Soviet authorities. He has wri
tten a new string quartet\, the haunting and challenging No. 3. For its p
remiere\, most likely so that he would not be accused of "formalism" or "e
litism\," Shostakovich renames the movements in the manner of a war story:
\n\n1. Blithe ignorance of the future cataclysm\n2. Rumblings of unrest an
 d anticipation\n3. Forces of war unleashed\n4. In memory of the dead\n5. T
he eternal question: Why? And for what?\n\n.........\n\n#2\nIt's 1980. In
twenty years\, NASA will commission you to take sounds of space and weave
them into music. This sounds will come from plasma wave receivers flown on
a variety of Milky Way spacecraft over a period of 40 years. That is yet
to come: for now\, you are writing Sunrise of the Planetary Dream Collect
or. It is an improvisational piece\, inspired by a whimsical idea: each d
ay\, a dream collector collects the dreams of all the planet's sleepers\,
and redistributes them again next day. You write the composition for the K
ronos Quartet\, your new collaborators. It is in Dorian mode\, in fourteen
-beat modules (because seven!). They players choose the modules they are i
nspired to play.\n\n.........\n\n"For only now have I learnt to write quar
tets\; and this you will notice\, I fancy\, when you receive them." -- Lu
 dwig van Beethoven.\n
