I think it's safe to say that if Groupmuse had a mascot, it would be Franz Schubert. His rotund mug, as depicted in Klimt's Schubert at the Piano, is all over our website. And that's because he's one of the most profound and achingly beautiful souls in all of creation. In his mere 31 years of life, he decorated the halls of history with sound stories that will reverberate forever. And especially in his last year of life, he was plumbing glorious depths that arguably no other composer has known. You get it. We love Schubert. We love him very much.
So when our wonderful friends at San Francisco Performances offered us a stack of heavily discounted tickets to an all-Schubert night at the Herbst Theater, we couldn't say yes fast enough.
Featuring the world-renowned superstars Jonathan Biss on the piano and Mark Padmore on the larynx (he's a tenor), this'll be an evening featuring two of the great treasures of human civilization:
1. Schubert's A Major Sonata, no. 20
2. Schubert's last song cycle Schwanengesang (Swan Song)
Both of these works were written in that last year of Schubert's life - called by Benjamin Britten "the most miraculous year in the history of music" - and are great beyond words.
This will be an utterly transcendent evening of music, performed by two of the most exquisite talents of our time.
For most, such splendor costs $50/ticket. For us, because we're Groupmuse, we're getting them for $25. Think you can put a price on The Infinite? We just did. $25. And it's a steal.
