I don’t need to tell you all that here in New York, we take the New Year very seriously. And we here at Groupmuse New York do too, so when our many-time collaborators Quattro Battute Productions and the Manhattan Chamber Players - a collective of the best musicians on The Island - approached us with a proposal for the first Massivemuse of 2018, we knew we’d be doing right by you, and by Father Time.

On January 5th, 7.30pm, we gather in the Creative Cultural Center on Christopher Street:

The program starts with Leos Janacek’s "The Kreutzer Sonata” - one of the most profound and shattering works of the chamber music literature, it was inspired by the Leo Tolstoy short story of the same name, which itself was inspired by the Ludwig Van Beethoven violin sonata of the same name. I know we’ll get angry letters if I suggest that the final installment of this tryptic is the greatest of the three, but it’s just a suggestion!

It’s followed up by the NYC premier of Vivian Fung’s Humanoid for Solo Cello and Electronics. I’d say more about the piece, but it’s the NYC premier…

Then, we break.

For the second half, we’ve got a short piece by Berio, followed by four songs from Emi Ferguson and her brilliant and ground-breaking new work Amour Cruel. Ferguson has taken as a starting point the Air de cour - basically a 17th century pop song from the court of Louis XIV - and brought it into the 21st century to imagine what might have changed in the intervening centuries, and what might have stayed the same. It’s the exact sort of hybrid vision classical music needs to be governed by to find its place in a world that needs it so badly.

Tall Glass of Milk will be DJing for before and after sets, and we’ve got a glorious beer sponsor in the award-winning Melvin Brewing Company - so tickets come with an infinite amount of free beer.

$3 from every goes to the art non-profit “Project Music Heals Us” - which focuses on bringing the healing power of this great art to elderly, disabled, rehabilitating, incarcerated, and homeless populations.
