Lera Auerbach is something of a modern day Da Vinci. She's written 8 string quartets and two operas - for both of which she wrote the libretto (which means the script, for all you who aren't yet opera nuts). She's written three books of Russian poetry, one book of English poetry, and was named Poet of the Year in 1996 by the International Pushkin Society in New York. In Norway, 2013, she had her first solo exhibition of her visual work, which is primarily painting and sculpture. She's also a virtuoso concert pianist. And, thanks to our friends at San Francisco Performances, on Tuesday, March 27th at 7.30pm, she's coming your way for a Night Out in Herbst Theatre!

The evening is a dialogue of dialogues: between the old and the new; between the visual and the musical. It'll start with the world premier of Lera Auerbach's 21st Century Pictures - a work for solo piano (performed by Auerbach herself) that is a meditation on Modest Mussorgsky's eternal masterwork from almost 150 years ago, Pictures at an Exhibition - which will be performed in its entirety on the second half of the program.

Both works are the attempts of great artistic minds to evoke the visual arts purely through the arrangement of abstract sounds into what we call music - and who better to take up that challenge than someone who has so fully mastered both disciplines?
