Bach on Violoncello da Spalla and Rachmaninoff on viola & piano

I'm very excited to host my 3rd Groupmuse featuring Andrew Gonzalez playing Bach's 6th suite for unaccompanied cello on Violoncello da Spalla and Rachmaninov's cello sonata on viola with Carlos Avila on piano.

Andrew is a wonderful musician whom I met in July at the Valley of the Moon Music Festival in Sonoma, California where he was a performer. He started viola at age ten and graduated from Juilliard in 2016. He then won a two-year Fellowship in Carnegie Hall's Ensemble Connect, and he has became a regular performer at Bargemusic and other venues in NY. He recently acquired the Violoncello da Spalla, a five-string instrument played strapped from the shoulder instead of between the legs--so this will be a whole new exploration of Bach's 6th cello suite--and not from the middle of an auditorium but up close where you can clearly hear the capabilities of this instrument.

Rachmaninov's cello sonata, written for his close friend to be performed with Rachmaninov on piano, will be performed here by Andrew on viola with his friend Carlos Avila playing Rachmaninov's piano part. Carlos, also a Juilliard graduate, is on the faculty at Heifetz Institute and an active performer.
