Splendid news: Our wonderful friends at the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra are back in town for the year, and they want us to join for their season opener! So it’s off to Harvard University’s glorious Sanders Theatre for a Night Out!

The program features luminous masterworks from three successive cultural and aesthetic epochs. The opener, Mozart’s Overture to the Magic Flute* is the classical era par excellence - delicate, restrained, and formally perfect, but alight with the fire of the brightest genius.

Then it’s a hero of the Romantic: Brahms and his absolutely titanic Piano Concerto no. 2 - considered one of the greatest of all concerti, it’s teetering with expression and pathos — so much so that the standard three movements of a concerto give way to a massive forth movement. Presiding over the keys will be the great Italian pianist Alessandro Deljavan - only 32 years young, but already internationally acclaimed.

The concert ends with Bela Bartok’s Concerto for Orchestra — one of the most beloved works of musical modernism, featuring every texture of the orchestra in its own right.

As always with the BPO, we’ll be guided through the concert by the ever-brilliant conductor Benjamin Zander, as world-famous for his charismatic disquisitions as he is for wielding the baton.

Tickets typically average $75 but this here’s Groupmuse, and the BPO loves us something fierce, so we’ve got a stack for a mere $20! But it’s limited so if you want to join, hop on it!
