Beethoven was completely deaf by the age of 46, but kept composing until he died, at age 57. The String Quartet No. 16 was the last major work he completed. Even if he hadn't been deaf, he wouldn't have heard it performed -- it wasn't premiered until 1828, one year after his death.
Under the introductory slow chords in the last movement Beethoven wrote in the manuscript "Muß es sein?" (Must it be?) to which he responds, with the faster main theme of the movement, "Es muß sein!" (It must be!).
