About

I am a Brooklyn-based pianist, composer, and filmmaker originally from the small town of Bland, Va. I did a Bachelor's in piano performance at Mannes School of Music, a Master's in music theory at Indiana University, and a Performer's Diploma in collaborative piano at IU as well. I have been fortunate enough to perform in many renowned venues such as Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall, and I have won accolades such as a ASCAP Young Jazz Composer award, a Downbeat Magazine Outstanding Performance award, and an Emmy for my music video "Pastorale" that I made with PBS Appalachia. I also studied film and have written, shot, scored and directed short movies and music videos since high school.

Music

I have a classical and jazz background, but I love to play improvisations on gospel hymns, fiddle tune medleys, Eastern European chanson, and my own compositions. I have Russian, Armenian, and Appalachian heritage and I draw on that when putting together concert programs. I love to apply my knowledge of classical techniques and jazz improvisation when playing other types of music in order to take the listener on a trip through seldom-heard terrain. In every performance I give, I try to balance virtuosity and flare with heart and soul.
