With over 50 years experience, Ellen Burr is known internationally as a performer, teacher, improviser, and composer. She continually expands the possibilities of the flute, from classical to experimental. Ellen has soloed with orchestras across the United States and premiered numerous works by contemporary composers. She performs regularly with the Los Angeles Flute Orchestra, Present Quartet, and Andrea Centazzo’s West Coast Chamber Ensemble. Ellen teaches privately in Los Angeles, has taught at the California Institute of the Arts, Wichita State University, and taught gamer PointCrow how to play flute for a live Skittle’s challenge! Ellen is a Yamaha Artist and clinician with degrees from Wichita State University, California Institute of the Arts, and the coveted Certificat de Stage from studies with Jean-Pierre Rampal in France. Off stage, Ellen designs artisan and flute jewelry under her brand Music For Your Eyes, is an accomplished actor and playwright, and enjoys world travels.

Music

Ellen Burr’s music is anchored in Western classical tradition through her early experience soloing with orchestras and playing in chamber ensembles. She maintains this lineage through her passion for performing Baroque repertoire along with 20th-century classical music. This shows the audience the connection between traditional forms and tonal structures, and avant-garde languages, giving them new ways to listen. Ellen's curated concert programs rely on intimate acoustics of private homes and feature pieces representing the expansive flute heritage. Her latest house concert series showcased early 20th-century flute and piano masterworks by Hindemith, Bozza, Luzuriaga, Widor, Schulhoff, and LA local Pierre Schroeder. Her noon church concerts have interspersed works by Debussy, Honegger, Varèse, Piazzolla, and Telemann. Ellen brings historically rich programs to community-driven audiences, creating a warm, personal atmosphere that transforms each performance into a shared experience.
