About
Steve Long is an NYC-based pianist, composer, and educator working with sound, language, and space. A lifelong New Yorker from Canarsie, Brooklyn. Long’s musical path began at age eleven when a derelict piece of furniture—formerly known as a piano—was moved into his family’s home.
He studied composition at the Manhattan School of Music, earned a BA in linguistics from the American University of Rome, and received an MMA in Contemporary Improvisation from the New England Conservatory.
As an educator, Long has delivered lectures and workshops at The University of the Pacific, Northeastern University, Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School, and the Manhattan School of Music, often tracing lineages of queerness within American experimental music. He currently teaches at The New School in New York.
Music
The music that I play ranges from new compositions for my trio PRNCX (pronounced prin-cox) which is informed by jazz and other improvised music traditions, to early baroque music, especially the keyboard music of late 16th century England. I enjoy finding the rare and experimental across time and space.
