The Spanish Consort @thespanishconsort
Early Music Quartet
About
A quartet made up of Jon Wasserman
(Baroque Guitar/Voice), Carlos Cano
(Traverso), Santiago Lowe (Baroque
Cello) and Victor Gallego (Percussion).
The project'
s purpose is to highlight the
importance of Spanish history and
patrimony with a focus on the revival of
music that is often forgotten in the
modern programming of Spanish music.
Additionally, we aim to give light to the
amazing and diverse repertoire of
Spanish music and its influences from
around the globe. Our ensemble
highlights diversity even within our own
group of musicians, featuring musicians
from Spain, Cuba, United States and
England.
Music
In the antiquated world, the warning,
“non
plus ultra” (there’s nothing more beyond),
marked the edge of the known world at the
Pillars of Hercules in the Gibraltar Strait. By
the time Christopher Colombus sailed to
the Americas, the phrase had changed to
“plus ultra” (there
'
s more beyond). This
new phrase is where we get the title for our
program, Más Allá de Hispania. With this
expression, we justify the performance and
interpretations of the rich collections of
forgotten and underrepresented Spanish
music that existed or survived outside of
Spain.
The repertoire highlights 5 manuscripts
from Peru, Mexico, France, and Chile to
provide a taste of what had survived
outside of Spain from the late 17th to 18th
centuries. Although there are many
manuscripts and composers that fall
under this category, the repertoire was
chosen to focus on and represent our
ensemble
'
s instrumentation.
