Please join me and the George Crotty Trio (George Crotty, John Murchison, and Jeremy Smith) for an evening of jazz featuring Cello, Bass, and percussion.
Guest arrival begins at 7:30pm with music to begin around 8:00pm. Please note we will be taking our shoes off when entering the apartment.
I'll provide snacks. Please feel free to bring a bottle of something nice to share.
What's the music?
Often described as cinematic, pluralistic, and conversational, our original repertoire draws on modal jazz, Indian raga, and Arabic maqam. The program will feature selections from our three original albums.
Where does this music come from?
The cello may be more associated with classical music, but a select group of jazz cellists have proven that the instrument is much more than a niche or novelty in the world of jazz. In fact, the cello has been adopted into many musical traditions across the globe including traditional music from Scotland, Ireland, Egypt, and India.
Prominent jazz cellists include: Oscar Pettiford; Fred Katz; David Darling; Abdul Wadud; Erik Friedlander; Hank Roberts; and Tomeka Reid.
