Gotham Arts in collaboration with Groupmuse is excited to present an intimate private duo recital by pianists Alexander Bolotin and Arseniy Gusev featuring works for four hands by Mozart, Schubert, Mahler, Mussorgsky, and Janáček, in addition to an original work by Arseniy.

About Arseniy Gusev

Pianist and composer Arseniy Gusev was born in St. Petersburg in 1998 and has been studying music since the age of five. In 2015, he went to the Boston University Tanglewood Institute. In 2017, he graduated with honors from the Specialized Music School of the St. Petersburg Rimsky-Korsakov State Conservatory, and afterwards studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. In 2018, he moved to the US, in 2022, received his bachelor’s degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music, and in 2024, finished his master's program at the Yale School of Music as a composer. He now continues his studies at the Juilliard School as a pianist. Sergei Babayan, Keith Fitch, Chris Theofanidis, and David Lang are among his teachers. Gusev’s compositions present a colorful variety of styles and genres, some of which are solo, collaborative, symphonic, ballet, and opera.

He actively performs in the US and abroad, and has given solo concerts in Austria, Belgium, Italy, Slovakia, Russia, and Germany. His compositions are performed in Mariinsky Theater, Carnegie Hall, Konzerthaus Dortmund, St. Petersburg Philharmonic and other major venues. He collaborated with such conductors as Arkady Steinluht, Dmitry Vasiliev, Robert Carter Austin, Alexander Titov, Ilya Derbilov, Mikhail Golikov, and Mikhail Mosenkov, and performed together with such musicians as Jaime Laredo, Sharon Robinson, Olga Kaler, and Anthony Roth Costanzo. Arseniy participated in master classes of Garrick Ohlsson, Samuel Adler, Andrew Norman, Joan Tower, Dmitry Bashkirov, Grigory Gruzman, Jerome Rose, Alexander Mndoyants, Nina Lelchuk, and others.

Arseniy is a laureate of many prestigious competitions, such as the Dorothy McKenzie Artist Award, Cleveland Piano Virtu(al)oso Competition, Singapore International Piano Competition, Three Arts Piano Competition, Cleveland Composers Guild Contest, "Another Space" Composition Competition, International Gavrilin Competition, International Competition "Performer-Composer", and others. In 2025, he was awarded the prestigious Charles Ives Fellowship by American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Petersburg Gazette outlined Arseniy's music as "melodic and cantabile", "continuing the traditions of Russian school".

As of 2024, two solo piano albums by Arseniy were published: Enfleurage (Etymology Classics, 2023), and Musical Offering (Steinway&Sons, 2024).

Among Arseniy's recently published works are 24 Postludes (2018) and 3 Toccatas (2020).

About Alexander Bolotin

Alexander Bolotin was born in St. Petersburg in 2000. He graduated from the Secondary Special Music School of the Rimsky-Korsakov St Petersburg State Conservatory (class of Alexander Sandler). From 2018 to 2020 he continued his studies with the same teacher at the conservatory itself. Has participated in masterclasses held by Dmitri Bashkirov, Efrem Briskin, Alexander Braginsky, Pavel Nersessian, Miroslav Kultyshev, Alexander Kobrin, Anthony Newman, Matthew Cameron, Philippe Giusiano and Anna Malikova. Since 2021 the artist has been a student at the Manhattan School of Music (initially under the guidance of Arkady Aronov, and since 2023 he has been perfecting his skills in the class of Inessa Sinkevich). In 2015 Alexander Bolotin was awarded the Path to Scriabin scholarship, in 2017 – the A.P. Petrov Scholarship from the St Petersburg City Government, and in 2023 – the Arthur Balsam and Viola Markus scholarships.

Winner of the International Chopin Competition of Young Pianists (Narva, Estonia, 2023), the International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition for Children and Youth (Szafarnia, Poland, 2016), the International Academy of Music in Castelnuovo di Garfagnana (Italy, 2016), the Moscow International Chopin Competition for Young Pianists (2016) and the Mary Smart Concerto Competition (New York, 2018), 2nd-prize winner of the All-Russian Competition Young Talents of Russia (Moscow, 2017). Recipient of the St Petersburg City Government’s Young Talents award for 2011.

Alexander Bolotin has performed at the Mariinsky Theatre, the St Petersburg Philharmonia, the Sverdlovsk (in Yekaterinburg) and Kaliningrad philharmonics, the Moscow Concert Hall Zaryadye and many other venues. He has toured to Poland, France, Italy, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Finland, Estonia, Slovakia, Moldova, Kazakhstan, Israel, Japan and the USA. Has participated in the Mariinsky International Piano Festival, the festivals Summit (New York State) and KLAVER (“Piano”) (Tallinn), the David Oistrakh Festival (Sillamäe and other Estonian towns) and the Chopin Festival in Nohant (France) among others. Has performed with the Mariinsky Orchestra, the St Petersburg State Academic Symphony Orchestra, Moscow’s Borodin Symphony Orchestra, the North Czech Philharmonic Teplice, the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra (Greece), the National Philharmonic Serghei Lunchevici’s Symphony Orchestra (Chișinău, Moldova) and other ensembles.
