Before “composer” was a title routinely given to women, Clara Schumann was already doing the job: composing, performing, touring, raising a family, and becoming one of the most celebrated pianists of her era.
On October 6, pianist Orli Shaham brings Clara’s music and remarkable story to life at Kaufman Music Center, performing the full range of her piano works in an evening that puts Clara—not just the woman behind Robert Schumann—firmly at center stage.
Shaham will be joined by musicologist Sarah Fritz, author of the new book Madame Composer, for a deeper look at Clara’s life and legacy. And because Clara was also one of Robert Schumann’s most important champions, the evening concludes with the work she helped carry into the world: Robert Schumann’s Piano Quintet, performed by Shaham and the Juilliard String Quartet.
