The Boston Philharmonic opens with Weber’s Der Freischütz Overture, then hands the stage to violinist Guy Braunstein for Beethoven’s extraordinary Violin Concerto in D—a work often regarded as the summit of the violin repertoire. At the helm is Benjamin Zander, leading an ambitious program that culminates in Brahms’ Fourth Symphony, the final symphony of his compositional life and a work the Boston Philharmonic has returned to again and again over the past five decades.
It’s a program about musical maturity, virtuosity, and three composers who knew exactly how much could be said with an orchestra.
