What's the music?
Mozart String Quartet No. 15 in D minor, K. 421/417b
Schubert String Quartet No. 13 in A minor ("Rosamunde")
Where does this music come from?
Schubert's "Rosamunde" quartet was written in 1824, and premiered with the same violinist that was used in Beethoven's own quartet. This was a time when Schubert shifted from making songs for piano and voice to chamber ensemble instead. Many composers ofcthis time period wrote songs as they were popular in personal salons for families to enjoy. He also features many melodies from his songs in his quartet works.
Mozart's Quartet No.15 was written in 1783 when he was 27 years old. Supposedly, Mozart wrote key elements while his wife was giving birth, which you can hear in dramatic moments of the first movement. Although one of the lesser known Mozart Quartets, there are still gems hidden and intimate moments all throughout the piece.
