Two organs, one orchestra, and centuries of musical drama collide in Battle of the Organs, a concert presented by the Riverside Symphony at the magnificent Riverside Church. On November 15, acclaimed organist Nathaniel Gumbs takes on Francis Poulenc’s exuberant Organ Concerto, while Jonathan Mathis brings the wonderfully unusual barrel organ into the spotlight for a rare concerto performance. Under the baton of George Rothman, this program celebrates the organ in all its astonishing colors, power, and personality.
The afternoon spans bold orchestral drama and iconic organ repertoire, pairing Beethoven’s Prometheus Overture with J. S. Bach’s legendary Toccata and Fugue in D minor. From Poulenc’s vivid contrasts to Bach’s unmistakable, spine-tingling grandeur, this is a chance to experience the full force of these instruments in the soaring acoustics of Riverside Church. Through Groupmuse Nights Out, enjoy an afternoon of musical spectacle and discovery at a special discounted price. 🎹🎶
