One symphony leaves you wanting more; the other builds toward a monumental, almost cosmic finale. The Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, led by the ever-insightful Benjamin Zander, brings together two giants of the Austrian symphonic tradition for Schubert & Bruckner at Symphony Hall on November 22. First comes Schubert’s beloved “Unfinished” Symphony, a work of haunting beauty whose two completed movements have captivated listeners for nearly two centuries. Then Bruckner’s Symphony No. 5 takes over, unfolding on a grand scale toward a thrilling finale of intricate counterpoint and overwhelming orchestral power.

This is a rare chance to hear Bruckner’s Fifth with the Boston Philharmonic—it has been performed by the orchestra only once in its nearly half-century history. And the experience begins even before the first note: Zander’s engaging Guide to the Music pre-concert talk (free with your ticket!) offers fresh insight into the works, making this an inviting concert for seasoned classical fans and curious newcomers alike.
