San Francisco Performances

Our dear friends at San Francisco Performances have been so good to us this season, treating us to more world-class performances than we could have hoped for. It's so wonderful to have friends!

They're readying for their 40th anniversary Gala performance, and we're invited to their birthday! For the occasion, they're bringing through one of the past half-century's most commanding talents on the keys: Pianist Richard Goode. The guy's a living legend -- he's been receiving awards for his playing since the 1960's, and he only gets better.

For the evening in question, he's preparing a program of wild shades and colors, showcasing his instrument as a nexus of the most subtle and potent expressions and creation:

It starts with Leoš Janáček's In The Mists -- a masterly and sublime creation, a swirling, cascading vision, evoking the folk spirit of Moravia, Janáček's homeland. Like all Janáček, it's weird in the best way - and so abundant and lovely.

Then it's Frederic Chopin, the Emperor of the piano rep -- his Nocturne, Op. 55, No. 2 in E-flat and his 3 Mazurkas, Op. 59. The warmth, the virtuosity, the poignance, the intimacy. It's Chopin.

The program finishes with a set of watercolors - Claude Debussy and his Images Book 2, a collection somehow both translucent and substantial, evoking a spirit of possibility and movement, but also of such presence.

For an evening of such mastery, tickets run $60 on average -- but for our beloved community, we've got a stack for a mere $20 -- supplies are limited, though, so make your move!

And have a great Night Out!
