Full program notes

For centuries, ragas have been performed in close connection with nature’s rhythms, with certain melodies traditionally played at sunrise, midday, or in the stillness of evening.

Tonight’s program explores the gentle, introspective beauty of evening ragas through the sound of the bansuri, the North Indian bamboo flute. Known for its warm, voice-like tone, the bansuri is deeply expressive, capable of conveying both meditative stillness and intricate melodic movement.

The performance unfolds in a traditional yet intimate format. Beginning with a slow, unmetered exploration (alap), the music gradually develops into rhythmic compositions, allowing the raga to reveal its unique character and emotional depth.

Listeners are invited to simply relax, listen deeply, and experience the subtle shifts in mood and energy as each raga comes to life.
