Full program notes

Missing Voices sheds light on the irreparable loss of Jewish classical music composers during the Holocaust. Pál Hermann, Henriëtte Bosmans, Jozéf Koffler, and Daniël Belinfante—
these composers, and so many others, were often well-known before World War II, and their works were performed widely, frequently to great acclaim. But the path forward for them and an entire generation of future composers was, as we know, nearly obliterated
by the Nazis. Today, even the most historically informed instrumentalists are largely unaware of their music. The oversight surrounding them is akin to a double penalty; persecuted, murdered, or sent into exile, these composers are also “dead” to us today,
or their music simply seems irrelevant, demonstrating the thoroughness of the Nazi extermination machine.

Esteemed French pianist Dimitri Malignan initiated Missing Voices in 2020 with a documentary film and concerts in the Netherlands. He has since organized and performed in concerts around the world—from France, Belgium, and Italy to the United States and
Uzbekistan. Malignan has also produced, recorded, and released four CDs, with more in the pipeline, introducing a
broader audience to the music of these important composers.
Missing Voices is a powerful form of cultural restitution for these forever broken lives, whose voices must be heard.

Historical context

Missing Voices is a powerful form of Remembrance and Cultural restitution in addition to being a concert with many great works that deserve to be heard.
