Full program notes
In this program, Good Time Brass synthesizes the power and cohesion of a brass quintet with the incredible harmony and expression of jazz music! With our all-brass lineup, each musician is interchangeable as soloist, backgrounds, bassline, and harmony, allowing for a versatile and varied lineup for each tune. Our repertoire will straddle all areas of jazz, including standards such as “Summertime”, “My Favorite Things”, and “Green Dolphin Street”, Brazilian favorites “Girl from Ipanema” and “Blue Bossa”, and original compositions by The Westerlies and members of Good Time Brass that showcase brass chamber as a vehicle for jazz
Historical context
The brass quintet has grown into its own as a jazz ensemble through the lineage of its instrumentation. From the early days of jazz in New Orleans the soloistic trumpet, accompanying trombone, and dependable tuba bassline all were major players in the new sound. Adding an extra trumpet and the glue of the French Horn (introduced to jazz settings by Miles Davis and Stan Kenton) completes the brass quintet, a cornerstone of classical chamber music. Good Time Brass aims to connect this classical staple with its jazz lineage, performing a variety of music rooted in the New Orleans instrumental jazz tradition with a brass through-line to big bands, virtuosic jazz soloists, and progressive small ensembles.
