Bio

Originally from Powell River, Canada, Madeline Hocking is emerging as a dynamic violinist and composer based in New York City. A fierce advocate of new music and interdisciplinary works, she has collaborated with artists throughout the world, and loves to explore how various artistic mediums can enhance each other in their different modes of expression. Recent examples of work in this vein have included creating violin scores for contemporary short films ‘Blue Vice’ (a collaboration between chromic duo, BodySonnet, and Robert & Shana ParkeHarrison), and ‘Armour of Shells’ (with The Joffrey Ballet School NYC). She was ecstatic to give the world premiere of her original work for violin and live electronics, ‘In Transit’ (2022) at Manhattan School of Music earlier this year, which employed field recordings of traffic sounds, fog horns, and rain in combination with structured improvisation.
Known for her warm, singing tone and sensitive phrasing on her instrument, she has been the recipient of widespread recognition as both a chamber musician and soloist, having had the honor of performing at venues such as Lincoln Centre, National Sawdust, Chan Centre, the Canadian National Arts Center, the Banff Arts Centre, the Kiscelli Museum in Budapest, and the Massachussetts Museum of Contemporary Art.
She holds a Master of Music degree in contemporary violin from Manhattan School of Music, and a Bachelor of Music from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where she had the privilege of studying with Curt Macomber, Wei He, and Ian Swensen, respectively.
Throughout her lifetime playing music, Madeline has enjoyed engaging with other genres as well. Most recently, she recorded albums with jazz saxophonists Phil Dwyer and Cory Weeds in 2020-2021, and had the opportunity to study Hungarian fiddle music with István Pál in Budapest, a life-changing musical experience.
