Thomas A. Giles is a New York City-based saxophonist devoted to the performance of contemporary music and the creation of interdisciplinary work. He is the baritone chair of the MANA Quartet, performs a growing number of solo engagements, and often collaborates with artists of other media as multi-instrumentalist, improviser, and composer.
Last season, Giles’ was a guest soloist at Meredith Monk’s Happy Woman gala and with MANA made concerto appearances with the ECHO Chamber Orchestra in San Francisco, premiered and toured a new edition of Philip Glass’s Concerto for Saxophone Quartet, and performed recitals at Berkeley Chamber Performances and the international Bachfest in Leipzig. Other recent concertos include performances with the Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra, Syracuse University Wind Ensemble, and the Brooklyn Wind Symphony. Giles has played in the New York City Opera orchestra, Contemporaneous, Metropolis Ensemble, Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish (off-Broadway), New World Symphony, Megalopolis Saxophone Orchestra, and with the Pig Iron Theater Company. Giles has worked closely with an increasing number of innovative composers in preparation for performances and recordings, including Meredith Monk, David Lang, Charles Wuorinen, Martin Bresnick, David Maslanka, Troy Herion, William Brittelle, and the American indie-rock duo Wye Oak.
Giles has performed at such festivals and venues as Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Princeton Sound Kitchen, the Whitney Museum, American Repertory Theater at Harvard, FringeArts Philadelphia, PROTOTYPE Festival, Festival of New American Music, Music Center at the Strathmore, SoundWired Chicago, Atlanta’s Eyedrum New Music Gallery, Jacksonville’s Friday Musicale, Music in the Mountains (CO), Nußloch Kulturzentrum, Münster Musikhochschule, Utrecht’s Bartholomeus Gasthuis, Conservatoire de Strasbourg, University of St. Andrews (Scotland).
Giles has given masterclasses at dozens of institutions across the United States and Europe, including the Art Academy of Szczecin, Sächsisches Landesgymnasium für Musik in Dresden, the Manhattan School of Music, Miami’s Frost School of Music, the universities of Syracuse, SUNY Binghamton, SUNY Fredonia, California at Davis, Sacramento State, San Jose State, Arkansas, Colorado State Pueblo, West Virginia, Oklahoma State, Northern Illinois, and many others.
