About

The Johnson String Quartet, founded September of 2016 in Boston, is comprised of members John Guarino and Julia Meynert-Guarino, violins; Evan Perry, viola; and Robert Mayes, cello. They currently maintain a post as quartet-in-residence at Carriage House Violins of Johnson String Instrument.

The quartet members are graduates of the Manhattan School of Music, the Juilliard School, the New England Conservatory, and the Vienna Conservatory, and they have studied with members of the American, Avalon, Borromeo, Cleveland, Colorado, Guarneri, Juilliard, Muir, Pacifica, Shanghai, and Steude String Quartets. They have also spent their summers at festivals such as Pacific Music Festival, Portogruaro Festival, International Summer Academy Cervo, Jascha Heifetz Symposium, Perlman Music Program, Vienna Masterclasses, Lorin Maazel’s Castleton festival, International Music Forum Trenta by the Wiener Philharmoniker, Spoleto USA, Carl Flesch Academy, Oleg Kagan Festival, and Lockenhaus Festival.

Members of the quartet have performed as substitute musicians with the Boston Pops and Vienna Philharmonic, worked closely with living composers John Williams, Mohammed Fairouz, Gunther Schuller, Robert Beaser, and Tan Dun, and have been heard on concert series including Music for Food, First Monday at Jordan Hall, Fromm Players at Harvard, Tangelwood Music Center, Bargemusic, and Carnegie Hall Professional Training Workshop.

The quartet have as their mission to be of service not only by their concert activites, but also by educational outreach, and by their consultative availability to the clients, luthiers, and archetiers of Carriage House Violins. Recent engagements have included master classes, coachings, and performances at El Sistema Somerville and a benefit concert for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
