Odin Scherer is a guitarist, composer, and improviser based in Brooklyn, New York. A recent graduate of The New School for Jazz, he has performed at venues including Bar Next Door, Smalls Jazz Club, Williamsburg Music Center, ShapeShifter Lab, Green Lung Studio, and WBGO radio station in New Jersey. His diverse research interests include West African and Cuban folkloric music, wildlife and ecosystems, Black American music, and impressionist classical music and visual art.
Odin has studied with Mary Halvorson, Tony Malaby, Miles Okazaki, Patricia Brennan, Andrew Cyrille, Reggie Workman, Craig Weinrib, and David Virelles. During his time at The New School, Odin received the Alice and John Coltrane Award of Excellence and graduated with honors.
Odin’s debut record with Adam Cordero, “Ashland”, was released on bandcamp on October 2nd, 2020, which features original compositions from both. He is currently working on music for his quartet and duo project with Adam Cordero.
Traditional Repertoire
I mostly play jazz - standards, hard bop, post bop. Some notable composers whose repertoire I have delved into include John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock, Billy Strayhorn, and more.
