Tomas Rodriguez

Guitar (Spanish, Classical, Latin, Flamenco)

Tomas Rodriguez is a NYC-based guitarist with a unique repertoire rooted in his Spanish ancestry. His compositions explore the guitar's African and Latin American heritage. He has performed at the International Festival of the Guitar in Lima, Merkin Hall, Trinity Church amongst others, and released three full-length albums. Rodriguez is a dedicated music educator, running a unique honors-level guitar program for young people in Brooklyn that teaches African, Latin, Flamenco, Jazz, and Classical styles. He is a member of Local 802 AFM, ASCAP and The Guitar Foundation of America.

My repertoire is rooted in my Spanish ancestry and guided by the diverse styles of music that have inspired me. These include the folk music of Galicia, Spain, and Venezuelan harp masters Juan Vicente Torrealba and Malian kora virtuoso Toumani Diabaté. My own compositions draw on these influences, displaying an engaging groove, touching harmonies and a mesmerizing exploration of the guitar’s African and Latin American heritages. In addition to performing as a soloist, I also perform in duo with the Gambian kora master Salieu Suso and jazz cellist Barry Kornhauser.
