About

I am Chicago-born, New York-based drummer and conceptualist who has been blessed with the company of great musicians. I’ve performed with Wallace Roney, Ursula Oppens, Phil Woods, Joe Lovano, Anthony Cox, Bill Carrothers, Eric Reed, Santi Debriano, Marvin “Bugalu” Smith, Frank Lacy, Marquis Hill, Emmanuel Michael, Cassandra Wilson, James Weidman, and many others.

Music

I play jazz, which is black American music from the lineage of my teacher and mentor Marvin “Bugalu” Smith (Sun Ra, Archie Shepp), down to my mentor and trumpet giant Wallace Roney, down to John Coltrane, to Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, the drummers of Congo Square, the drummers of West Africa, and then the wind, the sky, time itself. I am inspired by the motion of the earth and this long lineage which never started and will never end. I have studied for three and a half months in Ghana, West Africa, living with the legendary guitarist, songwriter, and cultural icon Koo Nimo. I apprenticed with pioneering bucket drummer Ray King and master funk drummer Mark McRae. I studied with Chicago jazz drumming legend Joel Spencer for two years as a teen. I am a product of some of the greatest voices in American instrumental music sharing their life and wisdom with me. And at Columbia University I studied with legendary anthropologist Michael Taussig.
