Altschuler Summer Music Institute

173 Attendees hosted

The dates for the 5th Edition Sessions of the Altschuler Summer Music Institute will be July 7-18 in Premilcuore and July 21-August 1 in Rimini. ASMI’s faculty hails from The Juilliard School, New England Conservatory, the Royal College of Music, Bologna Conservatory, and pupils of the Leopold Auer and Andrés Segovia legacies.

What separates ASMI from other international festivals is access to our all-star faculty, our inclusive philosophy, student opportunities, and our special relationships with Italian musical institutions.

Appennino in Musica, the academy that hosts ASMI in Premilcuore, boasts approximately 16 classrooms (in process of being soundproofed), many with pianos, an orchestra rehearsal space, a hatch shell theater, and a church. Students from the Emilia-Romagna region students also participate in the program. With an administration that is bilingual, international, and passionate for Italian culture, we pride ourselves in fostering our relationship with Italian institutions, its faculty, and students. We believe in an exchange of cultures and ideas, inviting Italian teachers and students to participate in the program.

Conservatory “Maderna-Lettimi” (Rimini) gives us access to a recently renovated and air-conditioned monastery offering 18 classrooms, almost all with baby grand pianos, an auditorium with 88 seats and Steinway grand, and a library that seats 60-70 people.

We invite students of all ages, levels, and nationalities, and cultivate an inclusive, open, and healthy competitive atmosphere amongst students and faculty. They flourish by focusing on themselves and the music, rather than competing directly with each other. Faculty are commited to teaching and reaching students where they are, to bring them to a greater level of understanding. Students have attended from around the world including Ukraine, Poland, Venezuela, Costa Rica, China, Denmark, Croatia, Romania, Mongolia, Israel, Mexico, Italy, Greece, and the USA.

ASMI improves musicians of all levels and ages that are serious about developing their technique and artistry, through participation in masterclasses, private lessons, chamber music, and orchestra, taught by world-renowned artists. The institute creates high level musical opportunities for all of the participants: students, teachers and professionals. It is a diverse, inclusive, and immersive program, with an intense and joyful atmosphere, that inspires the growth and development of the students during the year.

The institute is open to all orchestral instrumentalists, guitarists, pianists, collaborative pianists, composers, and conductors.

The orchestra performs standard repertoire from the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods, as well as explores contemporary music. It offers opportunities to the students and faculty to perform as soloists and experiment with new repertoire and arrangements. This summer, we are planning a collaboration with the principals from the Filarmonica del Teatro Comunale di Bologna, performing a final concert in Teatro Manzoni (Bologna).
ASMI invites both student and professional composers to write for and collaborate with the orchestra in world premieres.

This summer, we are announcing our first international competition for instrumentalists and composers. Instrumental winners will perform with the ASMI Chamber Orchestra and composition winners will have their piece performed by the orchestra.

Students are coached and perform with faculty in chamber ensembles, learning through high level demonstrations. Some students will be invited via their video auditions and their performance at the institute, to perform with faculty in the United States and abroad.

The program has many performances open to the public, both inside and outside of the institute. The concerts include student solo concerts, chamber music concerts, and orchestra concerts.

Teachers share their artistry and cover technique including scales, etudes, caprices, sonatas, orchestra excerpts, unaccompanied Bach, sonatas, concerti, showpieces and transcriptions.

One of the objectives of Founder & Director, Emil Altschuler – pupil of Erick Friedman who was himself a protégé of the legendary Jascha Heifetz – is to raise awareness of his legacy, and to prepare young talent for a professional future, focusing on technique and interpretation, directing them toward artistic channels suitable to their personalities and propensities. The institute aspires to grow and become a international point of reference for young musicians of today and tomorrow.
