Cristian Budu is not just one of the most celebrated pianists in the world. He’s also one of the original inspirations behind Groupmuse and among our deepest and dearest friends. We’re so grateful to spend a Christmas Groupmuse with the great virtuoso, as he spins one of the most profound and precious tune tales ever told: Franz Schubert’s massive last sonata, D. 960 in B♭ major.

In its fullness, it’s over 40 minutes long, and in Budu’s hands, it’s a testament to just how beautiful the Universe can be. Cristian will be there for the before- and after-Zoom and we hope you’ll join us!

Both this performance and our Christmas Eve with Benedict Kloeckner have been generously underwritten by a small community of patrons — so all of the money raised for this groupmuse will go to the Groupmuse Foundation and will be fully tax-deductible.

What's the music?

Franz Schubert
Piano Sonata in B♭ major, D. 960

In 1965 I fell in love with Richter playing D850on a Monitor Recording. There are several versions of Richter playing that one on Youtube - am listening to this one as i write: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrWL9gNf_Yk

It's great that there are so many people from or with close ties to Brazil that are a part of the Groupmuse experience. You may know most or all of them. If you don't please look them up. In no particular order, there's Yuri Namkung who channels Bach's enthusiasm, Ana Paula Cordeiro, a gracious host whose art everyone should see and hold, Fabio Freire, always gracious as host, a great listener, Heloisa, host, journalist and a Canadian who I can't find now. On a lovely evening with flutist Melanie Chirignan we learned that he (the Canadian) had worked closely with a contemporary Brazilian composer. That evening he played some rich, seductive guitar pieces. Someone from the audience who was from Brazil danced a little. I'm sure I've left out some people.

Groupmuse is about creating a community - the pandemic makes that difficult. Hope I can make the recital and hear your Schubert.
