This is a groupmuse

A live concert in a living room, backyard, or another intimate space. They're casual and friendly, hosted by community members.

Host

Come join us to hear a beautiful piano/viola program. This is a great way to introduce classical music to children - they're welcome if they're quiet (lest they distract the musicians and other guests).

What's the music?

Erika Gray (she/her)

Schubert "Arpeggione" Sonata for Viola and Piano

Dorothy Fox Sonata for Viola and Piano

Where does this music come from?

Schubert's Arpeggione Sonata was written for a unique instrument of in the 19th century called the Arpeggione, which was essentially a bowed six string guitar. Often played on the viola or cello, this arrangement poses significant challenges, but can express an especially intimate and soulful side of Schubert's character.

Dorothy Fox was a British composer living in Paris in the early 20th century, and her sonata for viola and piano exemplifies much of the Impressionist French aesthetic heightened by her own unique voice and tragic course of her life.
