Please join me as I host Peter Paetkau for a solo violin program called "Bach Bites" that focuses on the development of the solo violin repertoire by using J. S. Bach's D Minor Partita as a starting place and then exploring how the repertoire has evolved and been inspired and influenced by Bach.

Peter is the Artistic Director of the Boston-based chamber music collective Analog By Choice and a graduate of the Longy School of Music. As an orchestral, chamber, and solo musician, he has performed in a variety of venues from Carnegie Hall to private homes across Canada, the U.S., Peru, and Europe. He is a regular member of ensembles including the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Odyssey Opera Company, Cape Ann Symphony, as well as Orchestra Without Borders and the Du Bois Orchestra where he holds principal positions. Paetkau’s teachers have included Anna Williams of the Neave Trio, Bruce Coppock, Solomia Soroka, Rosalyn Trianno, and Jameson Cooper of the Euclid Quartet among others.

Through his work with Analog By Choice, Paetkau has curated and performed in concerts highlighting often overlooked composers. His interest in giving audiences tools for actively listening to chamber music has translated into partnerships with storytellers, artists, videographers, and other creative mediums who provide the audience with entry points into the complexities of classical music. ABC, now in its fifth season, has performed across the greater Boston area and has expanded to towns around New England. In addition to their regularly scheduled season, ABC focuses on education and has developed highly acclaimed performances for youth that are interactive and engaging.

What's the music?

Analog By Choice Solo Violin

For violinists, J.S. Bach's Sonatas and Partitas for Solo violin have set the standard for unaccompanied playing for generations. Bach's ability to make an instrument, that usually plays one note at a time, express two, three, or even four voices simultaneously is renowned both for the technical challenge presented to the player and the musical integrity the composer is able to maintain. Using the D minor Partita as the starting point, this program explores the music of Bach, his contemporaries, and those who came after. Louis Gabrielle de Guillemain lived in the same era as Bach but had a slightly lighter take on violin music in his Amusement pour violon seul. Jessie Montgomery is a living American composer who is writing six Rhapsodys for solo violin inspired by Bach's work. This concert features the first in this ongoing project. Peruvian-American composer, Gabriella Lena Frank likewise took inspiration from Bach but used her travels around Peru as the inspiration for her Mestiza Suite. The whole program concludes with the infamous Chaccone from the D minor Partita, known as one of the most difficult works for the violin ever written.
