Before the violin became the star of the modern virtuoso stage, composers in the 17th century were already pushing the instrument to astonishing heights. Artificiosus Concentus: The Art of the Solo Violin, presented by ARTEK, invites you into this dazzling world through the artistry of violinist Cynthia Freivogel, known for performances that bring remarkable color, verve, and expressive freedom to early music.

The program explores the extraordinary solo violin repertoire of Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber, including his evocative Sonata in F and the spellbinding Guardian Angel Passacaglia, alongside sonatas by Biber’s student Johann Joseph Vilsmayr. These rarely heard works showcase the dazzling virtuosity and imaginative musical language of the Baroque era, with intricate passagework and striking emotional depth. Joined by Gwendolyn Toth on organ, Freivogel brings this music to life on period instruments in the intimate setting of Saint Ignatius of Antioch Episcopal Church. Come discover a side of the violin that’s as adventurous as it is beautiful. 🎻
