About

I am a professional musician with a DMA from Yale University, and advanced study at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam. I go back to the Netherlands every year to perform and record on historic instruments as well as visit instrument collections. I primarily play with the ensemble I founded some years ago, ARTEK. ARTEK specializes in 17th century music such as Monteverdi & Rosenmuller, but can perform repertoire from the 16th century through the early 19th century. ARTEK has numerous commercial recordings and large concerts in New York City each year. However, we also frequently perform benefit house concerts that are not unlike Groupmuses, and we'd like to do more!
I also am music director at a church, Immanuel Lutheran Church; I conduct the orchestra at Manhattan College; and I am one of the curators of the Flint Collection of antique harpsichords in Delaware. I travel with my own instruments; I have instruments in many sizes and styles, including a tiny pentagonal virginal that I carry over my shoulder, a folding Italian harpsichord (people love to see it fold & unfold) the size of a golf bag; a square Clementi antique piano; an antique fortepiano (harpsichord size); a clavichord suitable for a very intimate gathering; larger harpsichords including a gut-strung harpsichord, and a 9-foot opulently decorated German harpsichord; and even a small chamber organ that can be moved around (but elevators only please!).

Music

ARTEK specialties:
Monteverdi: Madrigals from books 4, 5, 7, 8, 9
Early Italian solo vocal composers (Strozzi, Sances, Merula, D'India, others)
Solo harpsichord/clavichord music from the 16th & 17th centuries
Italian madrigals by Wert, Marenzio, Gesualdo, D'India
Early Italian instrumental music by Castello, Uccellini, Fontana
Early German instrumental & vocal chamber by Rosenmueller, Biber, Bruhns, Buxtehude
Chamber music of J.S. Bach
Vocal & instrumental music of Telemann, Fux, Handel, others
Classical era keyboard solo or duet concerts (Mozart, Beethoven, Clementi, Schubert, many others)
Fortepiano & vocal lieder by Schubert

In short, almost anything between 1550-1810 is repertoire we can do!
