How very grateful we here at Groupmuse are to Franz Joseph Haydn - generally regarded as the founding father of the string quartet. As classical music first started moving out of the court and the church so many centuries ago, Haydn saw the string quartet as both convenient and possessed of limitless musical potential - and so he wrote a cool sixty eight over the course of his long and glorious career, firmly establishing the string quartet as the pre-eminent chamber ensemble -- a title it's defended for 250 years.

And oh boy does that work nicely for Groupmuse! Because whether you're in a basement dungeon or a skyscraper’s penthouse, all you need is four chairs and we can bring along the greatest masterpieces Western Music has ever known!

Anyhow, when our wonderful friends and family at the Boston Artists Ensemble came along with an offer for a Groupmuse Night Out called “Founding Fathers”, featuring two of Haydn’s greatest string quartets, we were thrilled at the opportunity to celebrate this form that has meant so much to the life of Groupmuse.

The concert will also feature the second String Quartet by Arnold Shoenberg - who was a founding father in his own right (though of a very different sort) and also a mystery piece! And whoever guesses what this mystery piece is will receive two free tickets to another BAE show!

As per usual, BAE is doing two performances this coming week:

One in Salem on Friday, 8pm, at the beautiful and historic Hamilton Hall.

One in Brookline on Sunday, 3pm, at St. Paul’s Church.

Tickets are typically $30, but because it’s Groupmuse and fortune smiles upon us, you can get yours for $15 (and $10 for supermusers.)

Have a great Night Out!
