The Brahms German Requiem represented a watershed moment in both the career of the composer and in the arc of Art Music. While the Requiem is a quintessentially liturgical form, Teh Brahms Requiem abounds with an almost secular humanism - a seeming declaration that this music was finding its voice outside the halls of institutionalized power — the Court and the Church — and was becoming a music for everyone - a sentiment that resonates with us deeply here at Groupmuse.
And yet: On Thursday, March 22nd at 7.30 pm, it’s back to the Church we go for a Night Out at the astonishing and humbling Saint Thomas Church on Fifth Avenue, for a full performance of Brahms’ German Requiem. The huge and holy Hall will be filled with the angelic voices of the The Saint Thomas Choir of Men and Boys, featuring celebrated soloists Hyesang Park and John Brancy. They’ll be backed by Brahms’s own famous arrangement of the Reqiuem for two pianos — performed by Michał Biel and Katelan Terrell.
