The Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium, nestled in the heart of that unsurpassable jewel of culture, art, and beauty, The Metropolitan Museum Of Art, was among our first Groupmuse Nights Out stomping grounds, and we've since shared a handful of sold out evenings together in that beautiful place. And on April 21st, the Met is offering a particularly special evening in those sacred halls, and once again, they've generously invited us along for a Groupmuse Night Out, so off we'll go!
The Museum is currently hosting an exhibit called Visitors to Versailles - exploring and celebrating the 18th century in the life of the Palace of Versailles in France -- a fabled center of cosmopolitan culture.
The evening's concert expands upon the theme, starting with a short opera called Les plaisirs de Versailles by French genius of the Baroque Marc-Antoine Charpentier, which was first performed in the apartments of King Louis XIV.
The almost 340 year old masterpiece is counterbalanced by two new works - a Cello Concerto by Brooklyn-based composer Timo Andres, inspired by John Vanderlyn's Panoramic View of the Palace and Gardens of Versailles (now on display at the Museum in Gallery 735) and a new work for period and modern instruments by one of the leading lights in this age of music, Pulitzer-prize winner Caroline Shaw -- also inspired by the exhibition.
Early-music vocal group TENET and the Grammy-nominated new music group Metropolis Ensemble are being called upon to span these centuries and cellist Inbal Segev will sit front and center for the concerto.
Tickets to such an odyssey run $50 at the door, but this is Groupmuse after all and the Met is seriously good people, so we're getting a stack for $25 - a full 50% off -- but these things truly fly, so don't wait!
Also! Tickets grant you access to the Museum all day, so make a big, beautiful Saturday of it. And feel free to show up at The Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium as early at 6pm to enjoy a glass of wine and hang with your fellow 'muser before the show.
