In the many Boston Nights Out and Massivemuses we can lay claim to, we’ve featured Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, and so many more leading lights of European music culture. But one mighty name has never graced our e-marquees: That of late romantic/early modernist miracle Gustav Mahler. Mahler does more than write more than music — he builds towering monuments to human expression, depth, fear, and beauty, using every instrument known to him (and occasionally objects that were not formerly instruments) -- soundscapes of the grandest possible architecture that take us deep within to explore the enormity of the inner world.

Anyways, Mahler’s great, you’ll love him. And we’re so thrilled that the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra is preparing one of his greatest achievements: his fifth symphony, often know simply as Mahler 5. Best of all, they want us to join them at Symphony Hall for a big ol’ Night Out!

The great Benjamin Zander who leads the band has long had a special relationship with Mahler — so you’ll definitely want to come to the show early (6.45pm) to see one of Zander’s world-famous disquisitions, taking us deep inside the music before its power is unleashed.

And Mahler’s not all! The evening starts with the 3rd Symphony by Charles Ives — way shorter than the Mahler, but no less astonishing. Plus, Ives is undoubtedly the most influential composer to ever hail from New England, so put your Pats jersey on and show some local pride!

Tickets typically run $60 or more, but the BPO really does take such good care of us, so we’ve got a stack of only $20 — more than 2/3rds off! But you know as well as I do that these won’t last so make your move!

And have a great Night Out!
