About the Program:

If there is a common thread to this program, it would be the idea of taking something old, something extant, and reforming the material, recasting it into a new shape, and renewing it into something bold and fresh, for the world to experience

The Corelli Violin Sonatas, published on the first day of a new century, are seminal works that reinvented the genre of violin sonatas as a whole, bringing forth a greater sense of structure, unity, and a cohesive experience of the work. It is because of this, it can be said that violin sonatas are to be considered in terms of “Pre-Corelli” and “Post-Corelli”

Both the Liang and Kodaly deal with old folk melodic materials, from Mongolia and Hungary, respectively. Powerful, soulful melodies that were largely neglected by classical music, are taken up and recasted, refined. Through careful and masterful composition, the spirit and power of the music is not only retained, but exemplified in this intimate setting.

Of course, in the end, this is just a particular idea to frame your listening; you can enjoy these masterpieces however you please, as listening is a very individual, multi-faceted experience. However, at the same time, it is also a shared, communal experience—such is the joy of a concert. Please join us, as we experience these musical, artistic marvels come alive into the present.
