If some of Europe’s proudest culture exports are the masterpieces of classical music, then America has Jazz. A form of expression so expansive, drawing on such imagination, and suffering, and depth, and playfulness - it could only come from country as enormous and complex as ours. And, as the world becomes smaller and the space between the old world and new accounts for less and less, jazz and classical draw closer and closer together.

The Oakland Symphony, for its opening concert, is celebrating that emergent union, already a century in the making. Some of the leading jazz talents of our day, like composer/trumpter/guitarist Josiah Woodson, unite on a program with old masters like Billy Strayhorn, to unleash the full power of an orchestra — with a chorus to boot — in the service of this greatest American creation. This’ll be an unforgettable, wild good time.

And we’ve got a nice stack of Groupmuse Night Out tickets for a discount! While the average cost is $55/ticket, you can get yours for $20! But supplies are limited so make your move!
