[pending] Palaver Beehive Chamber Series: Into the Forest

With our final Beehive Series program of the season, we explore the great emotional depths and dimensions of chamber music. Inspired by Beethoven’s Quartet Op. 132 in the same key, Felix Mendelssohn’s Quartet in A minor was written in 1827, the year of Beethoven’s death. Though he was only 18 at the time, Mendelssohn’s Op. 13 is considered the first of his mature quartets, exploring themes of love and longing while taking cues from Beethoven’s writing, with the fugal section in the 2nd movement and violin solo in the finale. Written expressly for a competition, Dvorak’s String Quintet No. 2 in G Major stands out with its use of bass, and draws not only on the Viennese musical culture of Mozart and Schubert, but also from Czech folk styles, with syncopated rhythms appearing throughout the piece. At the close of the program we borrow from contemporary bluegrass greats Edgar Meyer, Sam Bush, and Mike Marshall, who wrote Death By Triple Fiddle along with classical violinist Joshua Bell for their album Short Trip Home.
