Full program notes

Rhapsody, Op. 79 no. 2 (Brahms) -- In this rich and lugubrious work, Brahms explores the extended harmonies of his late-Romantic contemporaries within the architecture of Classical forms.

Sonata, K 575 (Mozart) -- perhaps the most dramatic of Mozart's works for solo piano, this Sonata was admired (and heavily imitated) by Beethoven.

Sonata, D784 (Schubert) -- Schubert's darkest Sonata, culminating in a thrilling and virtuosic third movement.

Intermezzi, Op. 118, nos. 1-2 (Brahms) -- Two gems from Brahms' penultimate opus. The first is intense and passionate, and the second is sweet and lyrical. This is the mature work of a master composer.

Historical context

Brahms is well-known for having revered Beethoven and Bach. In letters to his contemporaries, Brahms also expressed a deep admiration for Schubert and Mozart.
