Full program notes

String Quartet by Maurice Ravel
Miniatures:
Pavane - Ravel
A Chloris - Reynaldo Hahn
Colliwog’s Cakewalk - Debussy

The feature of this program is Maurice Ravel’s colorful, groundbreaking quartet. This piece is a great example of his exquisite craftsmanship and creative textures and techniques for the instruments. The opening theme is one of the most famous beloved melodies in classical music. The second moment is a rousing romp through pizzicato techniques. The third movement is atmospheric and evocative of a lake under moonlight. The piece finishes with a thrilling movement in 5 (think Dave Brubeck!)

The rest of the program is charming French miniatures, including well-known pieces by Debussy and Ravel.

The unexpected gem of the set is a song by Venezuelan-born French composer Reynaldo Hahn. Hahn was Proust’s first and most important partner. His music explores themes of memory and nostalgia, just like his more famous partner’s novels.

Historical context

Reynaldo Hahn might be the most interesting historical aspect of this program. He represents the final breaths of a culture of French music that included Faure, Saint-Saens and the impressionists. Though he was writing through the middle of the 20th century, his music retained the spirit of the fin de ciecle, even as he was exiled as a Jew in Nazi-occupied Europe. He was a historical “glue” that tied together the old and new worlds, as well as various corners of the arts.

Ravel and Debussy represent Impressionism, though neither liked that label. Their music broke expectations of major and minor keys, explored new harmonies, textures and forms.
